Faith stood blank-faced at the open window of her motel room, puffing thin streamers of white smoke into the neon stained dark outside. The radio was playing softly. She wasn't listening to it, but then the song changed and the lyrics suddenly seemed to be telling a story - her story.

#I know I stand in line until you think you have the time to spend the evening with me. And if we go some place to dance I know that there's a chance you won't be leaving with me. And afterwards we drop into a quiet little place and have a drink or two. And then I go and spoil it all by saying something stupid, like I love you.

I can see it in your eyes that you despise the same old lies you heard the night before. And though it's just a line to you, for me it's true, and never seemed so right before. I practice every day to find some clever lines to say to make the meaning come through. But I think I'll wait, until the evening gets late, and I'm alone with you. The time is right, your perfume fills my head, the stars get red, and oh, the night's so blue. And then I go and spoil it all by saying something stupid, like I love you.#

Faith sighed regretfully and flicked the stub of her cigarette out of the window.

"Well, it's about time!" said the impatient voice behind her. "Are you coming back to bed, or what?"

Faith turned to face Buffy, her face wreathed in smiles. As she rejoined her girlfriend in bed, she thought that the really stupid thing had not been telling Buffy long ago. She now regretted all that wasted time spent alone in her room when she could have been with the one she loved.

She snuggled up close to Buffy. "I love you," she said, and claimed her lips with her own.

The End
